Český Šternberk
A Gothic castle from the mid-13th century with Baroque modifications; owned with few interruptions by the Šternberk dynasty.
In 1241, Zdeslav from the noble Divisov family founded the Early-Gothic castle upon the Sazava River and named it "Šternberk“. Hence it follows the new nickname of the Sternberg family and the coat-of-arms with an eight-pointed star.
The dungeon is a part of a high developed fortifying system that was built at the turn of the 15th and 16th century.
The guided tour leads into 15 historical interiors modified in the Baroque style. They feature rich stucco and painted decorations, valuable furnishings and family collections (the Knights’ Hall, the dining room, St. Sebastian’s Chapel, the Hunters’ Salon, the bedroom, the room belonging to Kašpar Šternberk with family portraits.) The exhibit features a collection of copper-engravings dating back to the Thirty Years’ War and collection of 17th century miniatures – the so-called “Dutch silver”.
