Křivoklát
Křivoklát is one of the oldest and most important castles of the Czech princes and kings, dating back to the 12th century.
An extensive Gothic royal castle was founded during the reign of Otakar II of Bohemia. It was substantially rebuilt by Václav IV. and later generously enlarged by Ladislaus Jagiellon at the end of the 15th century. In the 16th century, it used as a feared prison.
Křivoklát Castle was heavily damaged by fire several times, mainly in 1826. It took a long time to Fürstenbergs owners to restore it. The renowned architects Josef Mocker and Kamil Hilbert were concerned the reconstruction, which was completed in 1920s. In 1929, the Fürstenberg family sold the castle to Czechoslovak State.
A beautiful chapel, the Royal and Knights Hall with an exhibition of Gothic paintings and sculptures, a library containing 52,000 volumes, rich Fürstenberg museum and gallery, the prison and torture chamber with torture instruments, a monumental tower with large collections of hunting and a view of the surroundings, the Huderka tower with a black kitchen and observation gallery, a district office with temporary exhibitions, all of this and much more belongs to Křivoklát Castle, a national cultural monument.
