Štramberk

Štramberk

In the mid-14th century, Jan Jindřich, the brother of Emperor Charles IV, founded a small town with an oblong town square under an older castle. The signature watchtower called Trúba with a clock tower and remains of fortifications have survived here since the Middle Ages (13th century).

The town square is framed with houses in the Baroque and the Classicist styles and two interesting historical suburbs with folk wooden houses, situated on the slope under the castle hill. The local sweet cookies/wafers called “Štramberk ears” are a renowned local speciality, baked as a reminder of the Turkish siege. The Kotouč hill conceals the cave Šipka, well known for archaeological finds of a Neanderthal child’s jaw and various tools from the Early Stone Age.
