Znojmo

Znojmo

Before the mid-11th century, on the left bank of the river Dyje near a former Great Moravian fortified settlement a princely castle was founded.

The Rotunda of St. Catherine with precious Romanesque wall paintings praising the Przemyslids has preserved from the original complex. In the first half of the 13th century a town was founded here. The two main architectural features of the town – the Gothic tower of the Old Town Hall and the Gothic rectory Church of St. Nicholas - both date from the Middle Ages. Among other not-to-be-mossed sights are the two-storey Chapel of St. Wenceslas from the early 16th century, the Baroque monasteries of the Dominicans and the Capuchins, the remains of the medieval fortifications, and the extensive underground.

Among modern architectural sights are worth mentioning the protestant church in the style of Viennese Art Nouveau, the Neo-Renaissance theatre or the modern fresco by painter Husák in the Church of St. John the Baptist.

Znojmo is famous for its viticulture. The traditional vintage festival in Znojmo became a hallmark event for the entire region.

The National Park Podyjí, a destination in and of itself, is located to the west.
