HOLIDAYS SUITABLE FOR THE DISABLED
Accommodation and transport for the disabled
The Czech Republic is striving hard to improve transport and accommodation for the physically handicapped and the blind. Across the country the number of railway stations with disabled access is on the up, and every year Czech Railways introduces new trains with special carriages to accommodate wheelchair users.
Prague for the disabled
Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is attracting an ever increasing number of tourists from every corner of the globe. Thanks to the city’s participation in a project called Disabled Access it has now opened its doors to disabled visitors who will discover the same facilities here as in any Western European city.
UNESCO sights cater for the disabled
The Czech Republic is one of only a handful of countries on earth with such a concentration of castles, chateaux and UNESCO sites, most of which have at least partial disabled access. For instance Český Krumlov and Třebíč (both with UNESCO sites) arrange special events which open up their architectural heritage for the handicapped to enjoy.
Professional spa care
Few countries in Europe can boast such a rich spa tradition as the Czech Republic. Thermal springs rise out of the ground all over the country, and these have been used to cure a range of ailments for centuries.
Effective hippotherapy
In addition to classic riding instruction, many farms and stables in the Czech Republic also offer hippotherapy – therapy based on direct contact with horses. Contact with animals, time spent in a certain environment and advice from a team of specialists in hippotherapy can have almost miraculous affects on the physical and mental state of a physically handicapped person.
Places of natural beauty for the disabled
The Czech Republic is a country of architectural heritage and of extraordinary places of natural beauty. A large number of these places such as national parks and nature reserves can be visited by the physically handicapped thanks to disabled access facilities.
Disabled access at the cinema
Visiting the Czech Republic doesn’t mean you have to miss the latest film releases. Many cinemas strive to cater for disabled visitors, and are gradually installing disabled entrances and amenities. Many of the new multi-screen cinemas in Prague and other cities across the country such as Brno, České Budějovice, Hradec Králové offer a high standard of facilities.
Touch exhibitions
Museums and galleries in the Czech Republic are opening their doors to disabled visitors to an ever greater extent. Buildings are being altered to give access to wheelchairs and exhibitions now have special touch sections for the blind who can learn something about selected exhibits in this way.
Disabled access at music concerts and the theatre
An essential part of any visit to the Czech Republic is the country’s rich culture. Organisers of the many events which take place here take disabled visitors into consideration, meaning they can enjoy the same cultural experiences as everyone else. Concert halls and theatres have disabled access and wheelchair-friendly amenities are becoming commonplace.
Sport for the disabled
In the Czech Republic the opportunities for the disabled to enjoy sport are increasing by the day. If you are one of those who cannot live without sport, you can enjoy many different activities during your time in the Czech Republic.
