Holešov

The Šach Synagogue in Holešov belongs to the world unique. It is the only preserved synagogue of the so-called Polish type, which is characteristic with floral decoration, fruit or animal motives.

In Holešov the Jewish community existed since the 15th century and gradually grew, so that in the 19th century the Jewish population created one third of the inhabitants. The Šach Synagogue is dated back to the mid-16th century, in the 18th century it was rebuilt in the Baroque style, but its Renaissance central part has preserved. Today there is the museum exposition of the Jewish history and Jewish sights of Moravia. Father on the Jewish cemetery is worth mentioning. It is important by the Baroque tomb of the significant learned Rabbi Šach and became a pilgrimage place for many foreign visitors.
