Mikulov
The Mikulov Town is characterized by its panorama of the Baroque chateau , Renaissance spire of the Church of St. Wenceslas and by the Holy Hill on the foothills of Pavlovské vrchy. It boasts of a lot of significant religious sights.
In 1623 Cardinal Dietrichstein initiated the construction of the Chapel of St. Sebastian on the Holy Hill (formerly Tanzberg) as a protection against plague, which attacked Mikulov and its surrounding a year earlier. Moreover he ordered the construction of the 15 Passion stations along the path to the top of the hill. The place became famous with its autumn South-Moravian pilgrimages. Another interesting sight is the Dietrichstein Family tomb from the mid-19th century and the Late Gothic rectory Church of St. Wenceslas. Mikulov was famous with its religious tolerance. Since the 16th till the 19th century there was the seat of the rabbinate. The large Jewish ghetto with the Upper Synagogue and the Jewish cemetery from the 15th century are worth mentioning.
