28 October 2008: Celebrations Marking the Founding of Czechoslovakia
The Czech Republic concludes the anniversary of the portentous “eights” in 2008 with celebrations for the 90th year since the founding of Czechoslovakia.
The First Republic was declared from the ruins of the Austro-Hungarian Empire on 28 October 1918. Throughout the entire day the state holiday will be commemorated on television and radio programs, as well as at ceremonial gatherings on town squares, exhibitions and open houses at various landmarks.
Prague:
National Museum – Ceremonial gathering (12:00 noon)
Municipal House – open house, night tours
Municipal House – Concert for the Republic on the 28 October state holiday
Hussite Congregation of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church in Vinohrady – Ceremonial concert
Imperial Stables at Prague Castle – exhibition of 28 October 1918, 1928, 1938, and 1948 in memory of the Castle
Brno
Day-long period program; exhibition on the First World War, exhibition of historical technology, program for the public in the centre of Brno.
Ostrava
Open house at the New Town Hall, including free admission to the tower.
