Becherovka

Almost all spa towns have their own herb liqueur. The most famous is Carlsbad Becherovka, often called the 13th Carlsbad spring thanks to its popularity.

This excellent, traditional and high-quality alcoholic beverage, recommended as an aperitif as well as a digestive, is hundrer-per-cent natural product without any conserving substances, artificial colours or emulgators. It's only water from Karlovy Vary, quality alcohol, natural sugar and a very specific and harmonious blend of herbs and spices, of which Becherovka is made. The composition of this liquer is a closely guarded secret – only 2 people know the exact blend of herbs and spices, and every week they prepare the mixture which goes into the drink. This along with other ingredients takes two weeks to reach the barrels as Becherovka.

Josef Vitus Becher (1769-1840) was the person, who was at the birth of Becherovka. In addition to a trade in spices and colonial goods in the shop at the Three Skylarks he devoted himself to the production of alcohol. His son Johann (Jan) Nepomuk Becher assumed his business in 1838.
