Cathedral Lake in The Na Turoldu Cave
The underground Na Turoldu Cave system lies close to the town of Mikulov and is the largest and most important in the Pavlov Hills.
The opening of Cathedral Lake in 2009 has added to the attractions of this cave-labyrinth in the bowels of the Pálava ridge. The length of all corridors, halls and cathedrals extends over 1 km.
The largest Jurassic limestone cave system in the Czech Republic was created by underground water and is decorated, instead of by stalactites, by unique corrosive shapes similar to coral-reefs and stone foam with a number of holes and cavities. Elsewhere, the cave walls and ceilings are covered with crystals and clusters of calcite crystals.
Cathedral Lake is the largest space of tour route. The visitor is 37 meters below the level of the entrance here. It is periodically flooded of the progressive ground water, which creates a number of underground, emerald green lakes. A new access path makes 8 meters spiral staircase in the lowest part.
Other tour stops include The Old Hall, The Boulder Dome, The Hall of the shark's mouth, The Bat Dome, The Hall of the end and The Fairy Hall.
The cave is an important wintering site for bats, especially for the critically endangered Small horseshoe bat.
