Eurocarnival and XVII. Festival of Guggenmusic ensembles
Festival of carnival music groups in Prague.
Eurocarnival and XVII. Festival of Guggemusic Ensembles is coming back to Prague after a big success in 2006. After 4 years Guggemusic ensembles and carnival groups (Narrengruppen) with masks typical for German speaking countries, and beautiful costume dance groups from Italy visit our capital. The festival is held in a different European city every year. Last years it was in Paris, Venice, Berlin, Salzburg, Verona or Venice. The Eurocarnival has been held in Prague for the third time with a participation of nearly 1200 musicians, dancers, fools and jokers from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein and Italy. The festival has taken place under the auspices of the City of Prague.
Inhabitants of Prague as well as visitors have an unique opportunity to admire the beautiful and often very quaint costumes, dance in the carnival rhythm and enjoy participants for 3 days. The ensembles are going to perform a show at the Old Town Square and other locations in the center of Prague. At the same time they can be seen at some of Prague's restaurants and taverns during a day and in the evening hours where they go to warm up and of course play and dance.
The festival will culminate in a procession of all ensembles along Prague on Saturday from 2:00 pm. All participants will flock at Hradcany Square, from where they will set out the so-called Royal Way to Nerudova Street and through Lesser Town Square and the Charles Bridge to Old Town Square, where will start a collective playing and dancing of all ensembles at 4:00 pm. There will be also heard the most famous Czech polka „Beer Barrel Polka“.
