Festival of Open Cellars in Mikulov
Grape harvest festivals attract tens of thousands of visitors to South Moravia in September.
The celebrations are cheerful, but also very crowded. If you prefer a more intimate atmosphere, come to Mikulov for the Festival of Open Cellars.
From 17 to 18 October, you will be able to visit more than 50 cellars in historical Mikulov and two picturesque towns at the foot of Pálava Hills, Bavory and Perné. Most wine makers and winegrowing in this unique location will open its cellars for the first time. You can taste local wines and buy the wines to your archives.
The festival program will not be without a delicious gourmet menu. You can taste gastronomic specialties, and, above all, meet the people whose lives revolve around wine and the region of South Moravia.
Mikulov wine-growing region
First vineyard under Pavlov Hills has set up Roman legions in the 3rd century A.D., the great expansion of vineyards was reached in the region during the Great Moravian Empire. In the mid-13th century, when the Mikulov and Valtice became a part of the landed estate of Liechtenstein, the trade of wine has belonged to the highest sources of incomes of the nobility and burghers.
Thanks to sun the warm southern slopes are a home mainly of aromatic white wines. An exceptional quality and special mineral structure reaches Riesling Italico. Another typical variety of Mikulov region is Grüner Veltliner, a wide range of flavors excel Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay here.
