History hidden under the paving stones of Kroměříž

The great pride of the Moravian town of Kroměříž is a complex of gardens and a chateau that is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Should you head this way, be sure to also see the new permanent exhibition entitled “The history hidden under the paving stones of the city”. You will find it in the historic cellar of the building of the Museum of Kroměříž District.

The exhibition illuminates the history of the city and the everyday life of its inhabitants from the Early Middle Ages through the first half of the 17th century. Besides the diverse showpieces, visitors here also will see various model reconstructions—a medieval potter’s workshop, the black kitchen of a burgher’s house, a medieval cesspit and a wooden water main over three centuries old discovered beneath the pavement of a Kroměříž street. With the help of modern technology, people thus are able to set off on a virtual stroll of Kroměříž and discover what the city looked like midway through the 19th century.
