International folklore festival in Šumperk

The town of Šumperk, known as „the Gate to Jeseníky Mountains" holds the festival of folk ensembles from all over the world.

Held in mid-August, nearly an entire week is devoted to the meeting of several hundred performers from various folklore ensembles. The town becomes one giant stage, where musicians, singers and artists from the four corners of the earth alternate in the spotlight. Yearly growing number of visitors of the festival demonstrates the great public interest in folk culture, which brings near not only a life from various areas of our country to viewers, but also different countries from all continents.

Šumperk is administrative, political and economic centre of northwest Moravia. One of the most important historic monuments of the town is the former monastery church of the Annunciation. Its total reconstruction took place 1990 - 2005 and today it is a pearl of the town. The most important sights include the so-called Geschader´s house, church of St. John the Baptist, church of St. Barbara, remains of town walls and the Town Hall Tower with a view to wide environs. Particularly the panorama of Jeseníky Mountains with the highest peak Praděd is very nice.

The Geschader´s house offers an exhibition on a topic of witch trials. Visitors go round the basement of this listed building and use the latest technology so-called GuidePort, thanks to it they learn more about witch hunts from the second half of the 17th century. Cellars were built so that visitors are able to go himself and move from individual premises to others without a guide.
