Josef Suk Memorial in Křečovice

Visit the monument in the birthplace of the violinist and composer Josef Suk (1874–1935) with a long-term exhibition situated in the house where he spent a substantial part of his life.

The composer’s son had the house built in 1895 in the picturesque village of Křečovice that is now generally known not only as a birthplace of Josef Suk, but also as a setting for the Czech popular comedy “My Sweet Little Village” (in Czech “Vesničko má středisková”). Josef Suk used to spend his leisure time there after returning from demanding concert tours of the Czech Quartet, took refuge in the house during his life crises, and found there serenity and concentration for composing his works. Other important musical personalities used to come and visit him in Křečovice, such as Antonín Dvořák or, later, Václav Talich. In his declining years, Josef Suk moved to Benešov, making the house available for the family of his son, Ing. Josef Suk. After his father’s death, he established there a memorial that he bequeathed to the state in 1951.

Today, the Josef Suk Memorial is managed by the National Museum – the Czech Museum of Music in Prague. In two room of the memorial, original furniture is preserved, as well as Suk’s Bösendorfer piano, a collection of porcelain, pictures, sculptures, medals, and minor items that Josef Suk brought as souvenirs from his journeys throughout Europe. The exhibition in the remaining part of the memorial is devoted to the Czech Quartet and Suk’s compositions. The exhibition is accompanied by a new multimedia projection.
