Kepler Museum in Prague
Czech Astronomical Society is going to open Kepler Museum in Prague on Wednesday, 26 August 2009.
In the house where Johannes Kepler spent the last five years of his stay in Prague (1607 to 1612) and prepared an important writing Astronomia Nova were reconstructed rooms in the second courtyard where a new exhibition presents the life, work and personality of Johann Kepler.
The three circles in the logo of Kepler's museums gradually picture Mars, Earth and Sun. Just in Prague Kepler was engaged in these planets and their mutual position.
There are prepared interesting information panels for visitors and several displays of unique animations, such as a record of a real growth of a snow flake.
The museum is aimed at the general public, school groups, secondary school and university students and foreign tourists. In the museum you can buy souvenirs.
Even the visitors tickets surprise. There is a clock-face of the Prague's astronomical clock, which will show the exact time of entry into the museum. There will be also a stellar time. On the other side of the ticket there is printed a part of the Renaissance map of a starry sky. The whole map can be folded of 12 tickets.
Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) lived in Prague for 12 years. He published here more than 30 works. The Prague stay is considered the most important in his life. In addition to the discovery of the elliptical orbit of Mars he explained how the human eye sees and how to treat an eye defect - myopia or hyperopia. He designed and described the construction of astronomical telescopes. He specified that the shape of snowflakes is always hexagonal. He observed a supernova in Prague in 1604.
The protestant Kepler is one of those extraordinary people who are morally strong and stready in their opinions. His sincerity with which he describes the arduous path to discoveries in his work, allows us to look into the life of scientist at the turn of the Renaissance and Baroque.
Opening hours of the museum: 10 am to 6 pm, daily, except Monday
