Liberation Day in Plzeň
Liberation Day commemorates the last days of World War Two and the liberation of Plzeň by the American army.
On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II a grandiose celebration is preparing in Pilsen for days in early May. The main program will take place the first weekend in May. The following weekdays will be in token of memorial ceremonies, commemorative events and meetings with veterans. A centre of the city, the Lobzy shooting-range, Štruncovy sady and an area U Ježiška will come to life by the program. At the Lobzy shooting-range a military technology of Czech and U.S. Army will present by demonstrations of the most modern equipment of air rescue service and military police. At Štruncovy sady the 16th Armored Division and a Czech-British camp will camp there and in front of the Peklo Cultural Center will grow a military camp from 1945. In the area of U Ježíška will break out a big field battle, which can be seen from the neighbouring Millennium bridge. A convoy of historic vehicles will arrive in Pilsen from direction of Klatovy on the 2nd May in the morning and will find its standing in the Republic Square. Throughout the celebration the so-called Liberty Street 1945 will run, which will allow us to return to the life of a street in Pilsen in the spring 1945.
A celebration of liberty can not run without style music, so you can enjoy Back Side Big Band, Cop, Honza Vyčítal, Míša Leicht, Roháči Band, Taxmeni and others. A Saturday evening dancing in the open air will be a novelty of this year´s program. An evening film screening will be also prepared. The celebration will culminate by fireworks on Thursday evening on the 6th May.
