Look-out tower of the Town Hall in Ostrava
The hightest Town Hall observation tower (85.6 meters) is located in Ostrava. The tower of New Town Hall was finished in 1930 and is ranked among landmarks of Ostrava.
The metropolis of Moravia-Silesia region has the largest Town Hall complex. The observation platform is located at the height of 73 meters and offers a beautiful view of Ostrava, the Beskydy Mountains, the Odra valley and a border zone of Poland. In good visibility you also can see Praděd in Jeseniky.
A strict functionalist style enlivens the tower, whic according to architects makes a noble lighthouse of concrete, metal and glass. The peak of the Town Hall Tower rises to a height of 298.05 meters above the Adriatic Sea, which makes 85.60 meters above the surrounding neighborhood. The tower is equipped with a luminous clock-face, a lift and the lookout.
The tower is open all week from 9 am to 5 pm.
Ostrava, the third largest city in the Czech Republic, is situated in the northeast of the country and is the centre of the Moravian-Silesian administrative region.
A key moment in Ostrava’s history was the discovery of coal in the late 18th century, which later led to the development of the iron industry. The last coal was mined in 1994. The mines have been turned into mining museums.
The OKD Mining Museum
Located on the former Anselm Mine it is the largest mining museum in the Czech Republic.
The coal seams of the former Anselm Mine surface at the Landek National Nature Reserve, a world famous site in terms of geology, archaeology, history, natural sciences and mining. The Venus of Landek probably made the site most famous – it is a small, carved figure of a woman, probably the thinnest Venus in Europe.
An unique exhibition of the Mining Museum highlights the evolution of coal mining in the Ostrava-Karvina region, as well as mining technology, and rescue services. In fact, it is the largest exhibition of its kind in the world.

The Michal mine in Ostrava-Michálkovice
Authentically preserved buildings and equipment can be found in the former Michal colliery in the Ostrava district of Michálkovice, dating back to the mid-19th century.
The Hlubina mine, blast furnaces and coking plant at the Vítkovice ironworks in Ostrava
Known as the “Ostrava Castle”, the former industrial area of the Vítkovice ironworks and the winding tower of the Hlubina mine is a unique industrial heritage site, and an unmistakable symbol of Ostrava and the Moravia-Silesia region.
Ostrava Castle
The castle was built in the 2nd half of the 13th century. The aim and purpose was to protect a way from Opava to Těšín and Krakow and mainly the Polish border. In 1534, the Gothic castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance chateau and this renovation is still evident in ruins and in the interior. In 1872 the castle burnt, but was later restored. The main reason of its destruction was a mining of coal seams directly below the castle. The construction fell by 16 meters!
The original two-storey palace structure with its protective wall system has been preserved to this day. Today the castle is restored and visitors can see a permanent exhibition on the history of the building and the city of Ostrava, an exhibition of torture instruments, the castle’s vaulted cellars with witches, fresh-water fish aquaria and the castle gallery.
The Ostrava Castle is the city's most historic cultural monument with a rich offer of concerts, market-fairs, theatre performances and other events.

The second largest cathedral in Moravia and Silesia (after the basilica in Velehrad) is one of the most beautiful churches in the city.
The Church of St. Catharine
The original little wooden church was apparently built in the early 16th century. Nowadays the external appearance of the building is a precise replica of the original destroyed by fire in 2002, the interior is modern.
