Mikulčice National Cultural Monument – Valy
The first museum exhibition of the archaeological finds from Slovanské hradiště in Mikulčice was opened for the public in 1960.
Today, visitors to the museum can acquaint themselves with two permanent exhibitions and, afterwards, with replicas of the foundations of eight churches from Mikulčice and a prince’s palace, situated outside the museum.
The older permanent exhibition “Great Moravian Mikulčice – the prince’s castle in the alluvial plain of the River Morava” was opened in 1997 in the visitor’s centre (pavilion 1). This exhibition presents Mikulčice as a significant Slavonic and Great Moravian settlement with a rich history, documented through archaeological discoveries of high testimonial value. At the start of the tour there is an interpretive guide waiting by a three-dimensional map of the topographic situation of the Mikulčice ramparts as they were in the 9th century.
In Pavilion II of the museum, from 2008, there will be a new permanent exhibition entitled “Great Moravian Mikulčice – the second church and religious architecture of the prince’s castle”. Here are preserved and displayed the original “negative foundations” of the second Mikulčice Great Moravian church and a number of opened tombs with their skeletons. It was here, in 1954, that the academician Prof. Josef Poulík initiated the first trial dig for archaeological investigation of the locality. You can now enjoy a modern archaeological museum presentation that links components of the spoken word, music and film projection with direct examination of the museum’s exhibits.
After a tour of Pavilion II, it is possible to walk around the perimeter of the fortified settlement on a visitors trail and examine the terrain where there is a copy of the stone foundations of the building, furnished with information panels describing the particulars of the region.
