Museum in Bělá pod Bezdězem invites you to visit

Museum in Bělá pod Bezdězem is located in the early Baroque chateau on the spit towering above the valley around the river Bělá.

Already at the beginning of the 14th century it was built a medieval fortress in this place. Before the medieval fortress transformed into its present form, has undergone several reconstructions. To the construction form of the castle also entered Albrecht of Wallenstein, who held the manor in the years 1622 to 1634.
Today's form acquired the castle in the last major renovation, which initiated the owner of the manor, Count Josef Arnost of Wallenstein in the years 1689 to 1691. The construction work has led Bernard Canevalle which impressed to the castle an early Baroque appearance. The dominant feature of the castle has become a tower 32.4 m high with bulbed cupola.
From 1765 to 1767 was made an inner construction of the castle, because there was established a manufactory for hats, caps and weaving fustians. The manufacture was repealed in 1789 and the castle rooms were adjusted to suzerain´s apartments.
In 1855 a forestry school was set up in the north wing of the kastle. Dr. Emanuel Purkyně taught here 20 years He founded the botanical garden at the school and started here with a meteorological observation. In 1885 the school was relocated and the premises were adapted to the housing. The main part of the castle is used for housing now. The museum is placed here from 1939.
The castle is one of few examples of early Baroque architecture of the castles in Bohemia. For a public is open only a part of the castle, where the museum is located. In these places are also preserved the unique colored renaissance wooden ceilings from 1582 to 1615. Other gems include graffiti preserved on the arcades in the courtyard.
The castle, which is in the property of City Bělá pod Bezdězem, goes through the gradual reconstruction.
