Střekov Castle belongs among the best preserved ruins of castles in the Czech Republic. It stands on a black rock, which towers over the Elbe River to a height of 100 m and is located about 2,5 km from the center of Usti nad Labem. It was built to protect Elbe shipping around in 1319. It is a natural dominant and one of the symbols of the town Usti nad Labem.
Střekov Castle has a long history in which folk tales blend with the facts. For example, in 1842 the castle walls appeared genuine ghost. It was a composer Richard Wagner, who looked for a muse in the romantic nooks of the ancient ruins in a peculiar way. He was wrapped in a sheet and bummeled the Střekov Castle, he finally passed the poem, which later became the basis for the libretto known opera Tannhäuser.
A romantic look of the castle ruins attracted many prominent personalities (eg painter Adrian Ludwig Richter, Ernst Gustav Doerel, poet Karel Hynek Macha).
Between 1923 - 1936 there was built Masaryk´s lock with lock chamber below the castle on the river Elbe.
This year, Střekov Castle celebrates its 690th anniversary, and to celebrate it there was a range of news. The most important is the opening up of the largest space in the upper castle, the Knights’ Hall.
Tourists will also appreciate the excellent food in the local Gothic restaurant and a terrace with a view of the picturesque hills of the Czech Central Hillside.
