New “water trams” plough the Vltava
From the start of August 2008, two new boat lines will cruise the Vltava in Prague. They connect not only both banks of the river, but also the islands in the centre of the capital city.
One boat line connects the Smetana Quay at the National Theatre, Střelecký and Slovanský islands with the southern tip of Dětský ostrov (Children’s island). The second boat goes from Jiráskovo náměstí to Výtoň, then on by way of Smíchovská náplavka (Smíchov dock) to Císařská louka (the Emperor’s meadow).
The boats seat up to 50 people and can be ridden with valid city mass transit tickets. Transport of bicycles and prams is free of charge. SMS tickets are not valid on the boats. The operator of the water lines is "První všeobecná člunovací společnost", which transports passengers to the northern outskirts of Prague and also offers canal sightseeing cruises on the Vltava around Charles’ Bridge (including to provide expert commentary on the surrounding landmarks).
