Prague Castle presents the gold of the Incas
A temporary exhibition “The Curse of Gold – 1000 Years of Inca Gold”, which has been opened on 1 November 2008 in Prague Castle’s House of the Supreme Burgrave, is devoted to the ancient culture of a once powerful South American people, the Incas.
These fascinating, 1000-year-old gold objects, gripping descriptions of their uses, an attractive installation of the exhibits in specially lit showcases, and a description of the dramatic history of the Spanish conquistadors’ brutal quest for gold present a singular opportunity to become acquainted with the Indian cultures of the Andes.
These hitherto rarely seen exhibits from the Museum of Gold in Lima, Peru are presented in the Czech Republic for the first time. You will be amazed by this unique collection of cups, bowls, jewellery, stunning masks and other gold artefacts, which confirms the cultural richness of the former Inca people. Also impressive is the 4-metre high replica of the celebrated El Lanzón obelisk and objects illustrating the frightening shamanistic rites and funeral cults, as well as aspects of everyday life, of the Incas and other Andean peoples.
The attractively conceived exhibition presenting these Peruvian national treasures is supplemented with 3D laser projections, photographs and a fascinating accompanying text.
