Reconstructed malthouse of the Písek Brewery
In the historical quarter of the town of Písek and in the immediate surroundings of the one-time royal castle (today the Prácheň museum), you will find the reconstructed malthouse of the Písek Brewery.
The beautiful wood-scented premises of the malthouse, with their astonishing acoustics, serve for the organisation of various theatrical and musical programmes and exhibitions. The multifunctional space offers a range of possibilities for a varied and rich programme.
Písek has had the right to brew beer since the Middle Ages, when a brewery stood in the south of the former castle. In the 19th century, the brewery was extended with the building of the malthouse. Malt was manufactured here up until 1973. The building was subsequently used as a textile storehouse and later fell into disuse. From 2008, following reconstruction, the building is once again open to the general public.
Sladovna o.p.s. has prepared three permanent exhibitions for visitors: a history of illustration with particular focus on illustrators of children’s books (for example, works by Josef Lada, Josef Čapek, Ondřej Sekora and other authors), an exhibition of the Písek native, Radek Pilař, and an exhibition on animated film. Apart from these permanent projects, other halls are now available that provide for a varied programme. There is a smaller gallery for exhibition events, two multifunctional halls in the loft (white beams – suitable for organising various training sessions, seminars, workshops, thematic exhibitions and performances for small groups of visitors), and one large hall (low wooden beams – a hall intended for the organising of temporary exhibitions, workshops, and musical or theatrical performances). The halls are equipped with internet connections for a large numbers of users.
Opening times during special events are adjusted as needed.
