The Czech Republic to Liven Up with Jazz This Autumn
Step by step, nature prepares for its winter sleep. However, the Czech Republic is still alive. Autumn and winter are dedicated to jazz in Czech towns.
You will be able to enjoy outstanding Czech as well as international jazz performers at Czech concerts and festivals.
Jazz without Borders
From October 29 to November 14, 2010 several towns in Western Bohemia and a Bavarian town Schönsee will host the 5th international festival Jazz without Borders. You will listen to jazz melodies in the towns of Plzeň, Klatovy and Rokycany. The Pilsen Philharmonic Orchestra, Pilsen Conservatory and a number of clubs in the town of Plzeň will take part in this project. Milan Svoboda Quartet or Peter Lipa, one of the most outstanding jazz performers in Slovakia, for instance, will show their art of jazz. On November 11 the festival guests will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Belgian legendary gypsy-hot-jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, when the town of Plzeň, the European Capital of Culture 2015, will host Diknu Schneeberger Trio from Vienna or the tenor Arpad Vulkan and his colleagues.
Jazz Piano
From November 13 to 20, Prague will host the 15th International Jazz Piano Festival. Performers from the United States, Switzerland, Slovakia, Poland, United Kingdom, Belgium and Czech Republic will play in a magnificent St. Lawrence’s Church (Kostel svatého Vavřince).You will be able to listen to famous players, such as Veyron Weston, Yannick Delez or Chris Jarrett; the Czech Republic will be represented by Michal Nejtek.
Jazz Days in Slaný
From November 19 to 21, 44th Slaný Jazz Days will take place in the town of Slaný in Central Bohemia. You can enjoy listening to Josef Vejvoda and Petr Král Trio or Czech-American music formation comprising Evan Christopher, J.J. Jazzmen and Petra Vlková and many others.The town of Slaný, located some 40 kilometers from Prague, can be an ideal stopover on your way to the national park of Bohemian Switzerland, awarded by the prestigious EDEN title (European Destinations of Excellence).
Jazz in Brno
Stará Pekárna club in the town of Brno will organize 29 concerts for jazz fans attending the festival called Jazz Brno 2010, the last of them taking place on December 14 at 8 p.m. All of these concerts are non-smoking. Moreover, it is a very cosmopolitan festival: international and mixed jazz formations will perform at a number of concerts. The 14th festival will give full play to Czech female jazz singers, lead by the first lady of Czech jazz, the phenomenal Elena Sonenshine.
Těšín Jazz
A cross-border jazz festival in the town of Český Těšín and the neighbouring Polish town of Cieszyn, Těšín Jazz Festival 2010 will take place from November 24 to 27, where you can certainly enjoy listening to outstanding Czech, Polish, Slovakian and Hungarian jazz performers.
Český Těšín is one of the most recent towns in the Czech Republic, founded as late as 1920, following the post-war negotiations after the break-up of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. However, the town itself is very rich in history and traditions: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, classicistic, Art Noveau, cubist as well as functionalist sights can be found here. The town as well as the whole region is certainly worth visiting!
