The Kögler Nature Trail through the Krásná Lípa Region

Take a walk along the renovated Kögler Nature Trail, the first nature trail in the former Czechoslovakia.

Originally 12 kilometres long, the trail allowed tourists to take a trip around the natural sites of interest in the Krásná Lípa region. The present 23-kilometre track leads visitors through the protected landscape areas of the Lužice Mountains, the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and the Bohemian Switzerland National Park.

More than 40 information boards provide information on geology, nature and history. Many interactive elements have been placed along the trail. A unique technical sight, created by Rudolf Kögler, has also been renovated – a three-dimensional geological map of the region, made using local rocks.

Also available is a map indicating where the information boards are located and a guide to the natural trail. The latter publication includes nearly 80 pages of additional information on the topics of the nature trail. The text is accompanied by more than 100 photographs and illustrations.

Rudolf Kögler
Rudolf Kögler, a native of Krásná Lípa, devoted his whole life to nature, botany and astronomy. His greatest passion, however, became geology, which he engaged in only in his free time. Between 1933 and 1935, he created a unique three-dimensional geological map of the region in his garden, using original rocks from the surrounding area. Supported by many tourist associations, he managed to create the first nature trail in the former Czechoslovakia. The trail followed the significant geological phenomenon, the Lužice fault, which separates the granite region from the sandstone region. Wooden boards provided information about geological, botanical as well as regional landmarks.
