The Synagogue in Jičín

After a long, seven-year process of gradual renovation and reconstruction, the synagogue has now been newly opened.

The Jičín Synagogue is one of the few relatively well-preserved Jewish monuments in the Bohemian Paradise Region. Built at the end of the 1770s, it represents a very valuable period record of synagogue architecture.

A part of the synagogue that has remained well-preserved to this day is the cabinet where the Torah scrolls are kept (the Ark or Aron Kodesh), which is clearly a modified Baroque altar, purchased from the Church of St. Ignatius in Jičín following its abolition by the Jesuit Order. During rebuilding and historical surveying, the original stone and ceramic paving and wall paintings were rediscovered. The synagogue is an authentic example of a Jewish Tabernacle and a reminder of the history of the local Jewish community.

The synagogue is open throughout the 2008 summer season until 14 September.
