The White Lady haunts chateaux of Rosenberg
The White Lady is one of the most legendary ghosts to appear in Czech castles, chateaux and fortresses.
Within the wide range of castle and chateau ghosts, she is also one of the most dignified apparitions, usually only appearing quietly, passing you and then disappearing again.
The ghost of the White Lady is usually linked above all with the castle and chateau in Jindřichův Hradec, but also appears in the chambers of Třeboň, Český Krumlov and Telč.
You can see a famous picture of the lady in a white dress, representing the protector of the Rožmberk family and the Lords of Hradec, in Rožmberk Castle. The legends most frequently state that she represents the Rožmberk noblewoman Perchta, married to John of Liechtenstein. However the marriage was an unhappy one from the very start and the husband cursed Perchta in the end. The White Lady began to appear in the Rožmberk residences sometime around Perchta’s death in 1476 and was the harbinger of impending death, fire or new addition to the family for centuries after to the members of her family.
What you have to see:
The Castle and Chateau in Jindřichův Hradec – this complex of buildings built around three courtyards is one of the most extensive monument complexes in the Czech Republic. Points of interest worth a look include the old Gothic palace with early Gothic murals, the Renaissance roundel or the superbly preserved black kitchen.
Český Krumlov – one of the most beautiful cities in the Czech Republic, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Renaissance core of the city with its narrow medieval lanes complements the castle and chateau, where the attention of visitors is especially attracted by the Chateau Theatre, the best preserved and oldest late Baroque stage in the whole of Europe, as well as the Cloak Bridge, which arches across the castle moat over several floors on the western side of the castle complex.
Telč - the monumental Renaissance chateau with an English park in Telč, the backdrop to a number of film versions of fairystories. Without doubt the best known of these is ‘The Proud Princess’. Other significant sight is the town square – a unique complex of historical houses in the Renaissance and Baroque styles.
Třeboň - The Renaissance chateau, connected by a long corridor with the Rosenberg library and the complex of the Augustinian Monastery, is a significant architectural sight. The town centre features a large complex of burghers´ houses of various architectural styles.
Třeboň system of fishponds – a UNESCO Biosphere Reservation and Protected Landscape Area, where remodelling of the marshy countryside in the Middle Ages led to the creation of an extensive system of fishponds. Its history and points of technical interest in Třeboň fishpond management are described by the exhibition "The Třeboň region – countryside and people", which is housed in the basement of Třeboň Chateau.
