The most beautiful waterfalls

Did you know that the Czech Republic boasts over 100 waterfalls of all sizes?

As far as size is concerned there’s nothing here that can compete with the Niagara or Victoria Falls, but when it comes to idyllic picturesque locations and the stories behind how they were created, we certainly are contenders.

Mumlavský Waterfall in the Krkonoše Mountains
This is a 10m-high granite step near the centre of Harrachov in the western part of the Mumlava Valley. For most of year the water falls from 10m height, but when winter comes, the cold water turns to ice, and thus conjures up a huge icefall, original work of nature.

Pančavský Waterfall in the Krkonoše Mountains
The highest waterfall in the Czech Republic descends in several steps from the edge of the Pančavská meadow to the bottom of the Elbe Valley. There is the so called Ambrož view point with a nice view of the Elbe Mine, Goat Chine and Lysa Hill close to the waterfall.

Labský Waterfall in the Krkonoše Mountains
Labský Waterfall, near Labská bouda is high 45 m and another about 200 m falls aground along stones. The water falls from a table-land to the narrow and deep Elbe Gorge, which is a continuation of the Elbe Chine modeled by a glacier. Some nice cascades of the waterfall can be seen from a view point above its upper run.

Bílá Opava Waterfalls in Jeseníky Mountains
Bílá Opava Waterfalls - it is the name for the canyon of the Bílá Opava stream in the upper part of its course under the southeast slope of Praděd. The waterfalls are part of the Praděd National Nature Reserve and the most impressive location in the Jeseníky mountain range. The highest waterfall has a height of nearly 8 meters. Around the waterfalls there leads the Bílá Opava Waterfalls Nature Trail with information boards on local sights. The trail is accessible with difficulty, there are several bridges and ladders over the canyon.

Rešov Waterfalls in Jeseníky Mountains
The upper course of the Huntava stream, which rises in the Silver Mountains near Horní Město has hollowed out a deep rocky valley with numerous cascades and several waterfalls, the largest in Nízký Jeseník. You can travel through area, which has been a protected natural site since 1966, over wooden footbridges and stairs.

Skryjská Little Lakes (Skryjská jezírka) in Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area
Skryjská Little Lakes with a waterfall are situated near Skryje village in Křivoklátsko Protected Area in Central Bohemia. Zbiroh stream, which is an affluent of Berounka River, flows through the lakes. Skryje (approx. 3 km) or from the other side Podmokly Mill (1.5 km) can be the starting points to the Skryjská Little Lakes. Skryje village with its charming surroundings is also very well known as a significant paleontological fossil site made famous by renowned French scientist and engineer Joachim Barrande.

Brtnice Icefalls in Bohemian Switzerland
Brtnice Icefalls, admired with rich Germans already during the First Republic, are located not far from Brtníky village. Icefalls do not originate traditionally like frozen waterfalls, but they are made of water from melting snow. Icefalls do not grow every year, it depends on interplay of freezing and melting snow. When water flows down from the rocks, it floats mould, iron and silica sand and thereby the beautiful icefalls turn from yellow tones through green to brown and even black.

Small waterfalls on Vydra River in Šumava Mountains
One of the most beautiful routes through the Šumava countryside is the Povydří Nature Trail leading from the settlement of Antýgl to Čeňkova Pila. Anyone who as not travelled through the canyon of the Vydra stream has surely never even been to Šumava! Initially, a relatively calm waterway with many smaller stones is gradually turning into a blustering canyon, where the water makes a way among number of giant granite boulders lying in the riverbed, resulting in both rapids and smaller waterfalls. The river water has a dark ferruginous colour, because streams flowing into it come from extensive peat bogs.

Terčino Valley near Nové Hrady in South Bohemia
This was once just the ordinary valley of the Stropnice little river situated to the west of Nové Hrady, ordinary that is until Count Buqoy, on the wishes of his wife Terezie, turned it into nature park in the mid 18th century, containing many decorative trees and bushes. An artificial waterfall from 1817, which is powered by a mill race from the Stropnice little river, is ranked among the most beautiful places of the Terčino Valley.
