Tourist signs in the Czech Republic

Did you know that the marked hiking trails in the Czech Republic is considered to be the best of its kind in Europe?

It's true. Due to a systematic care of the Club of Czech tourists, which has worked since 1889, except a break during the war years. Nobody can say that the Czech Tourist Club organization is outdated. Since 1997, the club manages also the trails for bikers and skiers. Since 2005, its members contribute to the marking of horse trails.

Currently are marked over 40000 km of hiking trails (of which 2200 km of routes for skiers) in the Czech Republic. At the trail there are placed over 58000 direction indicators and tables, 3200 routers and 1600 laminated maps that simplify us the trip. Number of pathfinders was higher than 1300 during the last great marking and spent on it together about 61000 hours. Losing the trail is therefore virtually impossible.

Hiking trails are marked with signs, which consist of three horizontal bands. The middle band, which indicates the color of the route, is red, blue, green or yellow. The two end bands are white and make the sign more visible. The tourist sign constitutes of a square 10 x 10 cm.
At the crossing there is a sign with an arrow. At the end of marked trails you can find end signs. Various short branches are marked with special signs. Among them belong for example a branch to ruins of the castle, to an observation point, to a spring and other interesting objects.
So-called educational paths are usually marked with special signs of nature trail.
In towns, villages, and at the crossing with another trail and at other important tourist places the painted markings are added by tables and routers. From the table you get to know a name of the place, eventually its altitude, the signs inform on distances in kilometers to other destination of the trail.

All marked trails can be found put in tourist maps of edition of the Czech Tourist Club. Financial costs of signs have covered by the budget of the department of Travel Tourism of Ministry for Regional Development since 1997.
