Underground Mělník and a medieval well
Starting at náměstí Míru, you can make a tour of a part of the underground spaces of Mělník, including a medieval well.
The well is from the 14th century and is the widest well in the Czech Republic, accessible only through a 150 m long underground corridor.
The entrance to the well is secured by a safety grid. Visitor can, therefore, look deep into the well at the emerald-like water without fear. They can also look up at the late 19th century vault from which hang long stalactites. The dimensions of the well are particularly amazing. It is 54 metres deep, with a water column of 7 metres and it is 4.543 metres wide at the widest point immediately above the surface, or 3.943 metres at the entrance to the well. These dimensions have enabled the well to be registered in the Guinness Book of Records as the widest well in the Czech Republic.
In the underground premises, visitors will find a model of a winch that was used to pump water from the well. The tour also includes an exhibition on torture.
Regular guided tours take place daily at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 12:45 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
