Walking in Prague

Autumn weather is here! Even in Prague, the city green is slowly starting to change colors. Set for a walking and enjoy last warm rays of the sun. Autumn walks are ranked among the finest.

Průhonice Park
The magic of nature just a few kilometres from Prague’s city limits – that’s Průhonice Park, the location for scenes from many a film version of Czech fairy tales. One of the largest landscaped parks in Europe measuring 240 hectars can be found in the rugged valley of the meandering Botič Stream and is the ideal place to unwind and take a stroll through an inspiring landscape. Průhonice Park also includes a collection of valuable genetic fund collections and a collection of cones.

Prague Botanic Garden
The Prague Botanic Garden is located in a valley of Troja on the area of 70 hectares. The tropical greenhouse Fata Morgana is its best known part. It includes also an outdoor exhibition with the vineyard of St. Claire with a view of the Troja Chateau and surroundings.

Závist, the largest and best known Celtic oppidum in the country
The largest known Celtic oppidum in the Czech lands and Central Europe is open to the public. You can find it in Central Bohemia near Nižbor. It was built on Hradiště Hill which now looms over Zbraslav at an elevation of 391m.

Vyšehrad
This cliff above the river, with its dark silhouette of slender towers, is an inseparable part of the Prague landscape. To this day, Vyšehrad has preserved its atmosphere of magic and mystery. Visitors are provided with one of the most beautiful panoramas of old Europe, with quiet stops and relaxing parks that kindle positive thoughts on cultural and spiritual matters. Vysehrad, according to legend, is the oldest seat of Czech princes, at the turn of 11th and 12th century it was the main seat of the Czech ruler. There is located the Romanesque rotunda of St. Martin from the 11th century, the Neo-Gothic church of St. Peter and Paul, the Vysehrad Cemetery and casemates in Vysehrad.

The Eiffel Tower’s little sister – the Petřín Tower
The Petřín Tower (378m) rises above Prague’s old centre. This is probably the reason it has become one of the most popular places of interest among visitors and Prague’s inhabitants. The area around the tower is a perfect spot for a stroll and a picnic. The most famous Czech maze (Labytrinth on Petřín Hill) with straight and convex mirrors amuses not only children but their parents too.

Divoká Šárka
The romantic rocky valley connected to the legend of Šárka and Ctirad, which allegedly took place in the forests here. The extensive forest area in the city limits of Prague comes across as an oasis in the bustle of the big city and surprises each new visitor with its unexpected scenery. The Natural reservation Divoká Šárka is located on the rocky slopes of Šárka Brook and steppes above it and has become a popular destination for rock climbers and lovers of water, because there is a beautiful open air pool there.

Stromovka Royal Game Reserve
The Royal Game Reserve, nowadays mostly known as Stromovka, lies in the neighbourhood of the Holešovice Exhibition Grounds. Stromovka is currently used for recreational, sporting and also cultural and educational purposes. The Blanka tunnel is being dug under the Game Reserve, which will be part of the Prague Ring Road. The area of the Game Reserve has changed over the years and currently spreads out over about 95 ha.

Prague Arboretum focused on original tree species
The first Prague arboretum can be found under Albrechtový vrch on the edge of the Prokop Valley in Prague 13. The arboretum is home for trees, which our ancestors saw in the city at the turn of the twentieth century. Visitors can find forest species here as well as historical fruit trees, which the locals grew to make various preserves.

Romantic Kampa
The small and romantic island of Kampa on the River Vltava in Prague offers a tour of a location with picturesque houses and ancient history. The false island is separated from Malá Strana by an artificially created mill race known as Čertovka. The group of houses, which Čertovka flows between, is known as the Venice of Prague.
There were founded gardens in Kampa at first. Mills and mill gardens were built from 15th centrury. One such mill was Sova Mill, called by the owner Václav Sova of Liboslav. Today it houses the Kampa Museum with collections of art works of the 20th century. In houses on Kampa there lived several well-known personalities such as Josef Dobrovský, Jan Werich, Vladimír Holan, Jiří Trnka, Jiri Voskovec and Adolf Kašpar.
The Kampa Park serves to relax especially for families with children.
